John Russell completed 50 years in the Radio and Television Thoroughbred Racing
industry after being a commentator with leading Victorian Radio Station 3UZ for
30 years and after that with Satellite Television Station Sky Channel. Included
in his broadcasting career was commentating at the 1956 OLYMPIC GAMES
held in Melbourne.He has escorted tours to the Kentucky Derby, Epson Derby, French & Irish Derby's, Royal Ascot, Hong Kong, Philippines, South America and in the home front to the leading Racing Carnivals in Darwin, Perth, Cairns, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Adelaide and Great Eastern Steeplechase Carnival at Oakbank, Warrnambool Grand Annual Carnival, Alice Springs, Launceston and Hobart.
He has called 20 Melbourne Cups at Flemington and was the broadcaster for the popular movie Phar Lap. A winner of the H.A. Wolfe Award for outstanding services to Racing in 1997, he is a life member of the Darwin Turf Club, Moonee Valley Racing Club, member of Victoria Racing Club and the Melbourne Cricket Club.
